Return migration and transnationalism: alternatives or complements?

Call for abstracts

How are return migration and transnationalism connected? Research has shown the prevalence of the ‘myth of return’ and return visits as ingredients of migrant transnationalism, but what do we know about the connections between different kinds of transnational identifications and practices and considerations about return migration? Preparedness has been identified as an important success factor for return migration, but how does transnationalism affect return migrants’ preparedness for return, and how do sustained transnational ties impact on processes of ‘reintegration’? The Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO) will host a workshop entitled Return migration and transnationalism: alternatives or complements? and invites abstracts that address these or similar questions.

Left Behind ‐ The impact of economic migration on children left behind and their families

This phenomenon is still underestimated and often unknown even if it concerns approximately half million children in the EU. The event will gather experts from across Europe to analyse the situation of transnational families in different European countries. It will address the causes and consequences of the migration, in particular the effects on children and their families both in the country of origin where the children are left behind, and in the parents’ country of destination. The expert inputs will have a multi‐dimension approach and combine policy analysis with relevant psychological and sociological research.

Na crescente busca pelo alargamento e consolidação de laços científicos entre Portugal (e suas comunidades), Brasil e os países africanos de língua oficial portuguesa, e num momento em que se estabelecem acordos que procuram estreitar a cooperação, julgamos que seja oportuno lançar um olhar sobre as crianças destes países e, conjuntamente, encontrar um espaço de reflexão sobre a diversidade contida na multiplicidade das suas infâncias, no modo como entendem o mundo social que as rodeia e conforma as suas circunstâncias de vida, e, ainda, na capacidade e habilidade que demonstram para transformá-lo.

Jornada de uma jovem luso-canadiana (livro)

Imagine a teen being told that he or she has to follow their immigrant parents and begin a new life in a place that says nothing to them, taken from friends and school. This is a reality we are all well aware of. Stories of kids and weeping parents making headlines in the media. Nelsa Roberto, a luso-canadian writer from Toronto took the challenge to tell the story of a young girl whose family is deported to Portugal.

Portugal: Atlas das Migrações Internacionais

No final do século XIX, os portugueses saíam à procura de um futuro melhor e o Brasil era o principal destino. Migrações - um retrato do nomadismo contemporâneo (trailer de documentário)

Trailer do documentário "Migrações -- um retrato do nomadismo contemporâneo", que será exibido a 11 de Novembro de 2010, na Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, no âmbito do colóquio "Migrações, minorias e diversidade cultural". Todos os anos, 75 mil pessoas deixam o país. Dispersa pelo mundo, a diáspora portuguesa mostra neste documentário o que pensa e o que sente. São jovens emigrados na Suíça, em França, no Reino Unido ou nos Estados Unidos da América que falam da sua experiência fora do país. O colóquio está inserido nas Comemorações do Centenário da República Portuguesa.

Cimeira de Jovens Líderes Luso-Americanos

A National Organization of Portuguese Americans (NOPA), Organização Nacional de Luso-Americanos, realizará a primeira cimeira anual de Jovens Líderes Luso-Americanos, ou seja, a Young Portuguese American Leaders Summit (YPALS), um certame cujo alvo principal é pôr em ressalto as muitas vantagens e oportunidades oferecidas por Portugal, sobretudo aos jovens líderes luso-americanos.
A NOPA será a entidade patrocinadora do evento, a decorrer em Washington, DC, em Junho de 2011, com o beneplácito da Embaixada Portuguesa. Os temas da cimeira girarão entorno da política, economia e cultura portuguesas, assim como da situação actual das relações entre Portugal e os Estados Unidos da América. Dias das Línguas no Ruhr (Alemanha)

Tage der Sprachen im Ruhrgebiet: Ein sprachwissenschaftliches Projekt der Universitäten Bochum, Bonn und Duisburg-Essen fragt danach, wie Menschen mit Migrationshintergrund ihre eigene Sprachbiographie erleben, wie die individuelle Mehrsprachigkeit den Alltag beeinflusst. Das Ruhrgebiet spricht neben Deutsch auch Polnisch und Russisch, Italienisch, Spanisch und Portugiesisch, Türkisch, Arabisch oder Niederländisch...
Days of Languages in the Ruhr: How do people whose families migrated to the region experience their linguistic biographies? And how does their multilingualism impact on their everyday lives? These are among the questions addressed by a linguistics project of the universities of Bochum, Bonn and Duisburg-Essen. Besides German, many residents of the Ruhr also speak Polish, Russian, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Turkish, Arabic or Dutch. All of these languages are included in the project.

The Immigrant Paradox: New report shows how immigrant children are thriving in schools, community

PROVIDENCE, R.I. [Brown University] — Two Brown University professors are issuing a new policy report challenging what they say is the conventional view of immigrants in the United States, hoping to inform government officials, policymakers, educators, and the general public.
“The conventional view on the children of immigrants asserts that because of their social and economic environment and lower levels of assimilation, they are more at risk to fail in school and become delinquents,” according to the report, written by Evelyn Hu-DeHart and Cynthia Garcia Coll. “The conventional view is fundamentally wrong: New data and research shows that the children of immigrants do well in school and in the community. In fact, many studies show that many children of immigrants outperform their American-born peers both in school performance and in out-of-school positive behaviors.”

A two-year fully funded post-doc position is available within the Instituto de Ciências Sociais (ICS) of the Universidade de Lisboa, commencing in June 2010 or as soon as possible thereafter, under the supervision of Prof. Marzia Grassi.
The ICS-UL is looking for a researcher with a PhD degree in the area of social sciences to work on a project on the functioning of transnational child-raising arrangements for Angolan parents living in Portugal.

Transnational family making: children, young people and migration

Whilst children and young people are often at the core of the migration flows toward EU countries (‘on the move’, ‘left behind’ or as main ‘rationale’ for migration), they do not always receive the proper academic interest. This workshop aims to explore the migratory experiences of families (including children and young people) and to examine how policy-makers and service-providers assist children and families in this process. The workshop aims to bridge the gap between otherwise separated scholarships on immigration and emigration, by exploring the understanding of migration from home and host societies.

The workshop welcomes presentations that explore children, young people and parents own experiences of migration, but also papers that critically examine the policy provisions and social interventions aimed at children, young people and parents in the origin and arrival countries.

Há quase 30 anos, os pais de Cristina Silva sairam da Madeira em direcção à Venezuela. Há cinco anos foi a vez da filha emigar. Motivada pela insegurança e criminalidade que se vive na Venezuela, Cristina voou até Lisboa. Falámos com ela enquanto nos fazia "arepas".

João Leal é doutorado em Antropologia pelo ISCTE-IUL e professor associado na Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas da Universidade Nova de Lisboa. Investigador do CRIA, tem feito pesquisa etnográfica sobre imigrantes açorianos nos EUA, Canadá e Brasil. Entre outros, tem como interesses de investigação a etnicidade, transnacionalidade e migrações, identidade nacional e regional. A entrevista aconteceu em Lisboa no dia 15 de Dezembro de 2009.
