We are currently soliciting manuscripts for the inaugural issue of Cinevisto: Journal of Hispanic and Lusophone Cinemas, a peer-reviewed journal that focuses on film production in the Spanish and Portuguese languages, as well as films relevant to or produced by members of Hispanic and Lusophone communities in their respective diasporas, such as U.S. Latinos.

Português no estrangeiro custa 35 milhões de euros (DN)

Rede passou do Ministério da Educação para Instituto Camões, que admite problemas.

Trinta e cinco milhões de euros é quanto custa a rede de ensino de português no estrangeiro que o Instituto Camões (IC) "herdou" do Ministério da Educação este ano. Um investimento que nem sempre tem o retorno esperado, admite a presidente do instituto. Turmas muito pequenas e situações de injustiça em relação à língua portuguesa são alguns dos factores a mudar, indica - dando como exemplo o facto de Portugal pagar aos professores em países em que a língua faz parte do sistema oficial de ensino e até de suportar as despesas com salas no Reino Unido. Projecto de divulgação de autores portugueses no estrangeiro

A  DGLB desenvolve um conjunto de acções e programas integrados com o objectivo de contribuir para uma crescente difusão e reconhecimento da literatura e dos autores portugueses no estrangeiro.

No final do século XIX, os portugueses saíam à procura de um futuro melhor e o Brasil era o principal destino. Hoje, são os brasileiros a maior comunidade imigrante em Portugal, revela o Atlas das Migrações, um livro coordenado pelo sociólogo Rui Pena Pires e o primeiro alguma vez feito, reunindo dados sobre a emigração e a imigração nos últimos 100 anos.

Trailer do documentário "Migrações -- um retrato do nomadismo contemporâneo", que será exibido a 11 de Novembro de 2010, na Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, no âmbito do colóquio "Migrações, minorias e diversidade cultural". Todos os anos, 75 mil pessoas deixam o país. Dispersa pelo mundo, a diáspora portuguesa mostra neste documentário o que pensa e o que sente. São jovens emigrados na Suíça, em França, no Reino Unido ou nos Estados Unidos da América que falam da sua experiência fora do país. O colóquio está inserido nas Comemorações do Centenário da República Portuguesa.

The rights of the child in the context of migration (report)

Study of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights on challenges and best practices in the implementation of the international framework for the protection of the rights of the child in the context of migration.
This report seeks to set out the specific standards and principles that inform the international framework of protection of the rights of the child in the context of migration. It examines challenges in the practical  implementation of this framework, and notes some best practices in terms of legislation, jurisprudence and joint efforts at the bilateral, regional and international levels. The report ends with conclusions and recommendations which aim to strengthen the implementation of the international framework and better protect the rights of the child in the context of migration.

Voices in the US: Spanish and Portuguese

Almost 47 million people in the US are speakers of Spanish – more than 45 million - and Portuguese – more than one million - according to 2006-2008 Census estimates. Mester is interested in scholarly articles and reviews that reflect upon the idea of how Spanish and Portuguese speakers in the US use their language to negotiate their identity and thus
a. how this process is reflected linguistically
b. how it is reflected literarily
We are seeking academic articles and reviews about, but not limited to, the following topics:
- Social and Historical Linguistics: Spanish and Portuguese in the US;
- Literature: Negotiations of identity in the works of Spanish/Portuguese-speaking authors and their characters in the US;
- Dialectology: Languages in contact, bilingualism, diglossia, koineization;
- Cultural Studies: How Spanish/Portuguese traditions are manifested in linguistic/literary/cultural terms and literary imaginaries.

IMISCOE Maria Ioannis Baganha Dissertation Award 2011

This annual prize will be awarded to the best dissertation in the field of migration, integration and social cohesion in Europe. All academic disciplines are equally eligible. The prize is 2,500 euro. There will also be an opportunity to have the dissertation published in the IMISCOE-Amsterdam University Press Research series, subject to the manuscript’s review by the IMISCOE Editorial Committee.

The late Maria Ioannis Baganha was a leading migration scholar at the Centre for Social Studies (CES) at the University of Coimbra. She was one of IMISCOE’s founding members and the chair of its Board of Directors until she passed away in June 2009. To commemorate her work in the field of migration studies and particularly for the network, the IMISCOE Board of Directors has decided to dedicate the first IMISCOE dissertation award to her.

ONU alerta para falta de «pragmatismo» na promoção do português

(...) «Em termos pragmáticos, o projecto de transformar o português em língua oficial da ONU custaria 120 milhões de dólares por ano. Estes 120 milhões podem permitir a criação um programa de jovens funcionários (lusófonos), que existe para muitos países», vincou o director executivo a UNITAR.
Carlos Lopes sublinhou que se pode «ter 600 jovens funcionários que seriam enviados para vários organizações internacionais, que iriam criar muito mais espaço para a língua portuguesa».
Estes jovens «iriam transformar completamente a presença do português, em vez ter os documentos do Conselho de Segurança em português que ninguém vai usar», acrescentou.

África e Brasil: dois motivos para aprender português

(...) O ensino da língua portuguesa abrange 72 países, 294 instituições, 1691 professores e mais de 150 mil alunos. Mas motivações resumem- -se, maioritariamente, em três palavras: Brasil e África.

(...) Também na Europa a motivação para aprender a língua não se afasta muito das razões dos outros continentes. "A própria Europa interessa-se pelo português por razões que abrangem o Brasil e a África", afirma a presidente do IC. As excepções são ainda países como a Suíça e o Luxemburgo, onde a comunidade portuguesa e a rede de professores é muito expressiva.

Nosso comentário: Nada contra África e Brasil serem dois (bons) motivos para se aprender português. O que preocupa e incomoda é que nesta onda de promoção internacional da Língua Portuguesa, as comunidades portuguesas na diáspora são, geralmente, as menos visíveis.

Cimeira de Jovens Líderes Luso-Americanos

A National Organization of Portuguese Americans (NOPA), Organização Nacional de Luso-Americanos, realizará a primeira cimeira anual de Jovens Líderes Luso-Americanos, ou seja, a Young Portuguese American Leaders Summit (YPALS), um certame cujo alvo principal é pôr em ressalto as muitas vantagens e oportunidades oferecidas por Portugal, sobretudo aos jovens líderes luso-americanos.
A NOPA será a entidade patrocinadora do evento, a decorrer em Washington, DC, em Junho de 2011, com o beneplácito da Embaixada Portuguesa. Os temas da cimeira girarão entorno da política, economia e cultura portuguesas, assim como da situação actual das relações entre Portugal e os Estados Unidos da América. Dias das Línguas no Ruhr (Alemanha)

Tage der Sprachen im Ruhrgebiet: Ein sprachwissenschaftliches Projekt der Universitäten Bochum, Bonn und Duisburg-Essen fragt danach, wie Menschen mit Migrationshintergrund ihre eigene Sprachbiographie erleben, wie die individuelle Mehrsprachigkeit den Alltag beeinflusst. Das Ruhrgebiet spricht neben Deutsch auch Polnisch und Russisch, Italienisch, Spanisch und Portugiesisch, Türkisch, Arabisch oder Niederländisch...
Days of Languages in the Ruhr: How do people whose families migrated to the region experience their linguistic biographies? And how does their multilingualism impact on their everyday lives? These are among the questions addressed by a linguistics project of the universities of Bochum, Bonn and Duisburg-Essen. Besides German, many residents of the Ruhr also speak Polish, Russian, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Turkish, Arabic or Dutch. All of these languages are included in the project.

Fear and Safety in Children’s Literature

Children’s literature has always been responsive to the tenor of the times. Texts for children and young adults take up the social, political, and humanistic interests and ideologies of the past and present, as well as speculate about the future. Since the earliest fairy tales, children’s writers have given imaginative interpretation to the darker, riskier side of society, while also offering reassurance, hope, and celebration of the human spirit.

The Congress will address a range of critically important topics, texts, and theories related to the theme of Fear and Safety in Children’s Literature. Confirmed keynote speakers are: Professor Mavis Reimer, Canada Chair in the Culture of Childhood, University of Winnipeg; Professor David Buckingham, Director of the Centre for the Study of Children, Youth and Media, London University (UK); and Professor Gillian Whitlock, University of Queensland (Australia).

c) Afirmar este evento no calendário das grandes festividades de Macau, promovendo, assim, o turismo local e a animação urbana e espaços de recreio e lazer para todos ;

d) Revitalizar o modelo cultural próprio de Macau, pela divulgação dos elementos populares e tradicionais de uma das culturas que está na génese da identidade de Macau ;

Diaspora, Indigenous, and Minority Education: An International Journal

DIME is a quarterly peer-reviewed journal focused on critical discourse and research in diaspora, indigenous, and minority education – is dedicated to researching cultural sustainability in a world increasingly consolidating under national, transnational, and global organizations. It aims to draw attention to, and learn from, the many initiatives being conducted around the globe in support of diaspora, indigenous, and minority education, which might otherwise go unnoticed.

DIME invites research from a variety of theoretical and methodological perspectives that emphasize the centrality of marginal voices and a peripheral gaze, and which draw attention to the complex interrelations between political, economic, historical, and social contexts, as well as the ways in which these various contexts shape educational policies, practices, curricula, and outcomes. The journal welcomes articles that ground theoretical reflections in specific empirical research and case studies of diverse locations and peoples as yet underrepresented within scholarly research and literature, as well as action or participatory research studies of exemplary or “best” practices.
