Língua: “É muito urgente a certificação dos alunos” - Teresa Soares

Professora no estrangeiro há vários anos e actualmente a leccionar na Alemanha, Teresa Soares diz que o EPE sofre de “um conjunto de mitos que o desfavorecem”, como a questão do orçamento. “O que se gasta com o EPE é um por cento do valor das divisas que os portugueses no estrangeiro enviam para Portugal. Todas as tentativas de reduzir os gastos, por infrutíferas que sejam, prejudicam alunos e professores”, acusa. Ao Emigrante/Mundo Português, a docente e presidente do Sindicato dos Professores das Comunidades Lusíadas diz que nos seus 35 anos de existência, o EPE foi alvo de “políticas economicistas” e visto mais como “uma sobrecarga que convinha eliminar” do que como um sistema de ensino “a manter e dignificar”.

For Professor Caroline Brettell of Southern Methodist University, the book “offers an insightful and rich ethnographic comparison of how identities are formed and transformed among Azoreans in New England and Brazil" and "touches on a host of questions of critical concern in contemporary immigration studies [such as] transnationalism, the second generation, ethnicity, and the politics of culture.”

Alice Vieira: Falar o Português nas comunidades emigrantes é uma "mais-valia"

A escritora termina hoje uma visita de quatro dias a Toronto, no Canadá, no quadro das jornadas de incentivo à leitura de contos infantis e juvenis, promovidas pela Coordenação do Ensino Português no país com o apoio do Instituto Camões.

Durante a visita, Alice Vieira efetuou vários encontros com alunos lusodescendentes em escolas, entre outros eventos comunitários.

Having moved away at the young age of two and a half to live in Canada with my family in 1989, I only knew about my home land through pictures, stories and very faint memories. But the pictures and stories that I heard made me proud to be an Azorean.

My parents made an effort to allow me never to forget about the Azores and my culture and encouraged me to speak Portuguese. This is something that I am thankful that they did. (...)

Biographies and Autobiographies in the Portuguese-speaking World (Visiting Scholar at King´s College London)

King’s College London, with the support of Camões Institute, invites applications for a temporary position of Visiting Scholar for the period from the 10th October to the 9th December 2011. The Visiting Scholar shall teach six sessions of one hour seminar on Biographies and Autobiographies in the Portuguese-speaking World. Eligible candidates with a PhD and teaching experience are welcome from any area of Humanities or Social Sciences. The Departments of History and Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies will be directly involved. Applications can be sent by email to the administrator of the Department of History, Mr. Michael Broderick – michael.broderick@kcl.ac.uk -, with a CV and a project for the workshop. The total subvention corresponds to €9,000, including lodging and flights, paid in sterling at the exchange rate of the moment of the transfer, with the necessary tax deduction. The deadline for the applications is the 29th April.
