Captured Childhood - IDC Policy Document

The International Detention Coalition launches its policy document “Captured Childhood” in Geneva at the 19th Session of the Human Rights Council. Over the past two years, the IDC has heard first-hand the stories of children and parents from all over the world who have experienced immigration detention. In total 70 children were interviewed and we also listened to the experiences of 16 parents of children who had been detained. Consistent with the Convention on the Rights of the Child, this policy document conveys the stories of children who have been in immigration detention.

Welcoming Strangers - Conference

With accelerated inter- and intra-national mobility, the concepts of place and displacement, and their impact on individual and collective identities, have received unprecedented scholarly attention in disciplines as diverse as Geography, Politics, Music, Film and Media Studies, English, Postcolonial Studies and Migration and Diaspora Studies. The growing importance of multi-locality, transnational (and ‘post-national’) communities, cosmopolitanism and various forms of flexible citizenship call binarisms which posit ‘the stranger’ as ‘the Other’ of the indigenous community, as the ‘guest’ who is welcomed by the hegemonic host society, into question.

Return migration and transnationalism: alternatives or complements?

Call for abstracts

How are return migration and transnationalism connected? Research has shown the prevalence of the ‘myth of return’ and return visits as ingredients of migrant transnationalism, but what do we know about the connections between different kinds of transnational identifications and practices and considerations about return migration? Preparedness has been identified as an important success factor for return migration, but how does transnationalism affect return migrants’ preparedness for return, and how do sustained transnational ties impact on processes of ‘reintegration’? The Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO) will host a workshop entitled Return migration and transnationalism: alternatives or complements? and invites abstracts that address these or similar questions.

The International Migration Art Festival (IMAFestival)

Aware of the many problems and tensions that migrants are often associated with, the IMAFestival aims at highlighting the rich and positive complexity of such a phenomenon through the eyes and sensibilities of the artists. At the same time, artists will have an opportunity to show their talent to a large audience and hopefully influence, in a favorable way, the frequently bleak perception of “strangers”.

In order to reach his goals IMAFestival promotes every year the international contest "Art Your Food" on the theme "FOOD AND MIGRATION". The finalists and winners such contest will be awarded by competent jurors with concrete opportunities to show their work in important venues and meet influential people in the art world. The website and the events organized in different cities are becoming the marketplace where artists, experts, aficionados and the public mingle to exchange and share views and experiences on art, food and the proposed theme.

Milhões de pessoas no nosso planeta são diariamente barradas por muros, fronteiras e legislações proteccionistas de Estados-nação que, ao mesmo tempo, as atraem pelas leis do mercado e miragem de bem-estar social. A globalização vive esse grande paradoxo de liberalizar a circulação de bens, serviços e comunicações, reforçando em simultâneo as políticas estatais de fiscalização e controlo dos territórios. Um conflito está aberto entre a mobilidade crescente de populações movidas por motivações vitais e a impossibilidade ou dificuldade radical em encontrar um lugar de pertença num “mundo comum”.

No sentido de abrir o debate sobre as migrações clandestinas no panorama actual, o Núcleo de Estudos sobre Humanidades, Migrações e Estudos para a Paz, organizou um Ciclo de debates que abordará, ao longo de 2011, as diversas dimensões do problema. Serão projectados filmes documentários e ficções a comentar por um/uma convidado/a e a discutir pela plateia.

Youth Video Festival on Migration and Diversity

PLURAL+ Third Youth Video Festival on Migration and Diversity Calls for Youth Participation - Building on the success of the past two years of PLURAL+, a youth video festival on migration, diversity and social inclusion, the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) and the IOM again invite the world's youth to submit dynamic and forward-thinking videos focusing on these issues.



Young people between the ages of 9 and 25 are invited to submit short videos of one to five minutes in length. Recognizing youth as powerful agents of social change in a world often characterized by intolerance, cultural and religious divisions, PLURAL+ is aimed at involving youth in addressing the key challenges in their communities related to migrant integration, inclusiveness, identity, diversity, human rights and social cohesiveness.

Index de Políticas de Integração de Migrantes

O MIPEX ou Migrant Integration Policy Index é um guia de referência e uma ferramenta interactiva para avaliar, comparar e melhorar as políticas de integração e que abrange 31 países . Este importante estudo, liderado pelo British Council e pelo Migrant Policy Group em parceria com 38 think tanks, ONGs, fundações, universidades, institutos de investigação e organismos para a igualdade de direitos nos 31 países envolvidos, será lançado em Bruxelas numa conferência de imprensa internacional, no dia 28 de Fevereiro.

A terceira edição do MIPEX será publicada em livro e estará disponível como ferramenta interactiva num sítio da internet que permitirá aos implementadores de políticas, aos académicos, aos jornalistas e ao público em geral, pesquisar mais aprofundadamente os dados do que anteriormente e produzir relatórios que irão ajudar na análise das migrações e debates sobre os direitos dos imigrantes.

Left Behind ‐ The impact of economic migration on children left behind and their families

A stakeholder and expert conference: 2 March 2011, European Parliament, Brussels

This phenomenon is still underestimated and often unknown even if it concerns approximately half million children in the EU. The event will gather experts from across Europe to analyse the situation of transnational families in different European countries. It will address the causes and consequences of the migration, in particular the effects on children and their families both in the country of origin where the children are left behind, and in the parents’ country of destination. The expert inputs will have a multi‐dimension approach and combine policy analysis with relevant psychological and sociological research.
